Burgundy Franche-Compte
Burgundy invites you to slow down and savor. Rolling hills lined with vineyards, storybook villages, and quiet waterways create a landscape that feels both timeless and deeply alive.
As we drift along the Saône River and its network of canals, each day unfolds with simple pleasures—long lunches, local markets, and, of course, some of France’s most celebrated wines. This is a journey rooted in beauty, flavor, and the art of lingering.
A Week Along the Water
A glimpse into the rhythm of the journey
Day 1
We depart in the afternoon from our boat base in Branges, a small town just outside Louhans. From here, we ease into the journey along the tranquil River Seille, navigating its manual locks and drifting toward the village of Cuisery, known for its charming bookshops. After a gentle walk through the village, we return aboard for dinner as the pace of life begins to slow.
Day 2
We continue toward the Saône River, one of France’s great waterways, linking north to the Seine and south to the Rhône. Along the way, we stop in Tournus, a picturesque town of quiet streets and historic charm, before continuing to Chalon-sur-Saône, where timbered houses, towers, and centuries-old fortifications line the riverbanks.
Day 3
Leaving the river behind, we enter the Canal du Centre, a classic French canal ideal for cycling along its tree-lined paths. We cruise toward Chagny, with time to ride or simply enjoy the scenery. In the afternoon, we visit Domaine de la Folie for a private tasting of their exceptional Rully 1er Cru Clos Saint-Jacques.
Day 4
A morning train takes us to Beaune, the heart of Burgundy’s wine country. We spend the morning exploring its elegant streets before a tasting at the renowned Château de Pommard. For those who wish, an optional sunset hot air balloon experience offers a breathtaking view over the vineyards before returning to the boat.
Day 5
We continue along the Canal du Centre to Santenay, where we visit Domaine de Château for a tour and tasting. After lunch, we retrace our path along the canal—another perfect opportunity for cycling—before rejoining the Saône and heading toward Gergy. If time allows, we may stop at a local goat cheese producer, or visit the following morning.
Day 6
Our final full day takes us along the Saône to Verdun-sur-le-Doubs, a small and charming riverside town where we pause for lunch. From there, we return to St. Jean de Losne for a final evening together, enjoying dinner ashore to close the journey.
Day 7
Departure in the morning.
Each journey unfolds a little differently, shaped by the rhythm of the water, the weather, and the small discoveries along the way.
